Faculty Member Gives Back
A nationally renowned nutrition researcher, Dr. Barbara A. Gower understands the powerful impact that giving back has on the future. Since she first came to the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1996, Barbara, professor and vice chairwoman for research in the Department of Nutrition Sciences in the School of Health Professions, has served as the primary mentor to 16 masters and 13 doctoral students and has taught countless more.
Barbara has made tremendous advances in research during her tenure, but she knows that the need for research is never-ending. She firmly believes the best way to ensure your legacy is to plan for—and endow—the future yourself.
To accomplish this, she included UAB in her estate plans. Through a bequest, she will establish the Barbara A. Gower Endowed Graduate Fellowship, which will provide a stipend for
doctoral students in the Department of Nutrition Sciences. These students will conduct research in the areas of nutrition and obesity, and they will carry on her powerful tradition of seeking answers to our country's most daunting health concerns.
"The effort to advance the field of nutrition and obesity requires high-quality training of promising students, so I wanted to give a gift that will allow UAB students the freedom
to continue their education and training without financial concerns," Barbara says.
"Students are our future, and I want to ensure that talented, young individuals mature into independent investigators in the area of nutrition and obesity."
